Family lore says that the Ballou family was descended from French Huguenots that fled France to escape religious persecution, and settled in England. Another story was that they were descended from a Norman chieftan who invaded England with William the Conqueror in the year 1066. No record of Maturin Ballou's trip to the colony of Rhode Island exists, but it is known that he was a very early settler and was one of a group of men listed in 1646 as "co-proprietor of the Providence Plantations" with Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island. (All this means is that he was given land and later, the right to vote in colony affairs.)
